What is Bike to Duluth!?
Bike to Duluth! is a free, self-supported, Randonneuring Style cycling event where cyclists bike roughly 170 miles from the Twin Cities to Duluth, Minnesota.
A what now?
Randonneuring! It's a fancy French term for long-distance unsupported non-competitive cycling.
WHY!?
Fair question. It’s just epic. It’s a prefect combination of mental and physical challenge, risk, and reward.
The first time was just out of fascination, the idea of traveling so far by bicycle just blew my mind! I didn’t know if I could even do it! I was pretty intimidated but the thought of being mostly on bike trail and knowing I was never too far from help if I needed it put me at ease.
Why I did it again and again is because it’s so amazing to experience the landscape change to “up north” as you’re riding your bike. It’s truly a unique experience. I’ve driven up to Duluth dozens of times but I never experienced the journey or my state like this. The scenery toward the end is just absolutely stunning. It’s seriously it’s some of the prettiest shit I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some pretty shit! It like makes me proud to be Minnesotan and the sense of accomplishment is overwhelming. Tears flowed from my eyes the first time I rolled up to that sweet lift bridge.
I’ve done this ride as an overnighter and as a straight shot and every time has been different. I’ve done a lot of epic rides but this one is just iconic to me. This was my first “epic ride” and is what set the hook in me! I hope I can do this ride at least 100 more times!
